Painting notes
A small log of miniatures, terrain and the mistakes made along the way.
Weathered steel without metallic paint
September 2026
Non-metallic metal on a knight's pauldron: a dark brown-grey base, two glazes of thinned blue-grey, and a hard edge highlight only where the light source actually hits. The trick was resisting the urge to add a third glaze. Rust streaks went on last with a sponge and a dry brush.
A ruined chapel from foam board
July 2026
Five millimetre foam board, a ballpoint pen for the stonework and PVA mixed with sand for the rubble. Primed with thinned black acrylic so the spray would not melt the foam. Took three evenings; the arched window took one of them on its own.
Wet palette, finally
May 2026
Baking paper over a kitchen sponge in a lunch box. Paint stays workable for days, and glazes are far easier to control. Should have done this years ago.
